The first thing Jake noticed when he awoke was the absense of the sewer smell. The next was the fact that be was bound with steel restraints on his arms and legs. The last was that he was in a small, dim concrete room strapped to a steel slab at about a seventy degree angle. He ached from head to toe. He heard footsteps, then a man came into view. He had black hair that was beginning to go gray, wore a business suit, and was about six and a half feet tall.
"Awake, I see. Your battle with the Chemist was an excellent judge of your powers. It allowed me to construct the nulifier wand and the anti-anomaly gun. You very nearly broke the nulifier's control, however. I am impressed. Nonetheless, you will now serve your purpose. I, Lord Grimlock, shall not wait to see if my machine succeeds, for I have more important matters to attend to. You see, my half-ethereal guest, you are a flaw in my plan to harness the power of the twilight, a flaw that must be eliminated. How better to dispose of you than to use the very same power that spawned you? In five minutes you will become a conduit of power from the twilight at the edge of reality. A pity I will not be around to witness it. Goodbye, my guest."
Before Jake even had a chance to say anything he was gone. Wires descended from the ceiling and attached themselves to the slab, and the countdown began. The wires started glowing with yellow-green energy, growing in intensity. Jake tried to go ethereal, then noticed the nulifier wand only a few inches away. He reached for it, but his fingertips could only brush it. The slab was growing cold, and Jake's muscles began to tense. He had to reach the wand! He didn't know what the twilight was, and he had no desire to find out. He had less than three minutes left and he had yet to make any progress. Two minutes. Jake had worked one leg loose. One minute. Both legs free. Thirty seconds. Arms still aren't free. Fifteen seconds. What is it like to die? Ten seconds. Mabye I can destroy the wand with my legs.
Five seconds. With a teriffic crack Jake brought his heel down on the wand and broke it in half. He quickly entered ethereal form and leapt off the slab just as it glowed brightly, cracked to pieces, and fell in a heap. Jake ran out of the room. He had no intention of letting Lord Grimlock escape, though it might already be too late.
